School of Engineering and Design - Brunel University

The School offers a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The undergraduate programmes include both traditional engineering courses in electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and design and are complemented by some highly successful programmes in computer-related fields e.g. Multimedia Technology and Design BSc, Broadcast Media (Design and Technology) BSc and Mobile Computing BSc. The Undergraduate programmes are either 3 year full-time or 4 year thick sandwich. There is flexibility for students to transfer to either of these modes of study. In the sandwich mode students spend the third year in industry. The sandwich programmes are highly recommended as students not only get paid (between £12, 0000 to £20,000), but many come back from their placement year with a job offer from their placement company. There is also a one year enhanced Foundation of Engineering programme for students that do not have the right entry qualifications. This programme is designed to strengthen students in engineering and design subjects enabling students to take up the first year of their chosen degree after successful completion of the Foundations course. There are a number of exciting new programmes starting in September 2007 : BEng / MEng Civil Engineering with Sustainality; BEng / MEng Communications Networks Engineering; MEng Design Engineering and BEng / MEng Space Engineering.

The postgraduate programmes again offer both traditional engineering courses in electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and design and are complemented by some highly successful programmes in computer-related fields. There are three modes of study : 1 year full-time, 2- 3 years part-time (attendance for 1 or 2 days a week enabling students to work whilst studying) or 3 – 5 years distance learning (where students can study for a masters at home). A number of very popular programmes recently introduced address the global concerns of energy conservation and environment e.g. Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Electrical power, Sustainable Energy : Technologies and Management. Exciting new programmes commencing September 2007 include MSc Distributed Systems and Grid Computing and MSc Human-Centred Design.

Assessment: There are a broad range of assessment methods employed including assignments, individual and group projects, laboratories and examinations in May each year.

The School of Engineering and Design is one of the largest and most successful engineering and design Schools in the UK, providing a wide range of exciting, forward-looking undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Recognised as a centre of excellence in engineering and design with a strong focus on modern science and technology, the School has an international reputation in research and prides itself on high quality teaching supported by excellent research facilities. The School’s high reputation has led to extensive and close collaborative links with industry. These links and the sandwich placement scheme have meant that the School’s graduates are highly sought after as employees.

The School has 4 academic subject areas : Advanced Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering, Brunel Design, Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Teaching and facilities were rated “excellent” in the last independent assessment. Facilities include modern, well-equipped engineering, design and computer laboratories, motorsport workshops and wind tunnels. For students on the aviation, aeronautics and aerospace courses there is a state of the art flight simulator with a VTOL facility enabling the testing of project and design work in a practical setting. Also BITlab is a new post-graduate research area, completely redesigned and built from a former engineering workshop. It boasts some of the worlds most advanced visualisation and multimedia equipment, available for various post-graduate research projects currently continuing with the School of Engineering and Design.

Brunel Engineering and Design courses feature high in UK league tables. In The Times Good University Guide in 2006 Brunel General Engineering and Design was rated in the top 10 in the country. In the current Research Assessment Exercise, Mechanical and General Engineering scored a grade 5 and Design a grade 4 out of a possible 5 star. Many undergraduate courses are accredited with UK professional organisations including the IMechE, the IET and the Institute of Engineering Designers. Some of the IT related programmes may also apply for membership of the British Computer Society. A number of postgraduate courses enjoy accreditation and approval status with, for instance, the IMechE and CIBSE and other courses are in the process of seeking accreditation.

The School has is a thriving student population with approximately 1600 undergraduate students, 550 postgraduate taught students, 300 research students and fellows and 110 academic staff

Course Bursaries:
MSc Engineering Design
For UK applicants there are 3 bursaries available valued at £2000 each awarded on academic merit. To be considered for these bursaries applicants holding an offer must submit in writing in no more than 500 words to the Course Director (a) What your future ambitions are? and (b) How this course will help contribute to those ambitions? A Panel will adjudge the award of these bursaries in the early summer. Written submissions may be sent to the Course Director, e-mail .

For International / EU applicants there are 3 bursaries valued at £2500, £2000 and £1500 each. All applicants receiving an offer will be sent an application to enter a Design competition, closing date 15 May 2007. A panel will adjudge the award of these bursaries.

A UK first or second class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification usually in engineering or other appropriate science and technology subject areas. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.
