Construction law is fast moving and highly specialist. A wide range of professionals require to keep abreast of developments. Having a good practical understanding of this challenging subject is critical in a number of professional sectors.

Arbitration is an increasingly popular method of dispute resolution in a range of industries. Understanding how the system works, looking at the range of alternatives available and examining this medium as an alternative to litigation, adjudication and other possibilities are just some of the aspects covered in the course. The professional focus of the course is enhanced by the availability of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CiArb) professional examination exemption after only one year, as well as by recognition of the course by the Faculty of Advocates and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

This course is suitable for the working professional as it is taught on a part-time evening basis and, since 2004, by distance learning on our award winning virtual campus. Our virtual campus is supported by a dedicated technical team. This medium allows for a diverse range of teaching and learning methods to be employed including interactive online discussions (including tutor-student and student-student interaction) and video clips.

Course Aims

This programme will equip the relevant professional with an in depth knowledge and understanding of key topics in the fields of construction law and arbitration. Within the Law department at the Aberdeen Business School - a state-of-the-art building with teaching facilities which include the university Virtual Campus. This provides students and staff alike with access to learning and teaching facilities both on and off campus and we have over 300 students taking our range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Admission requirements The requirement for successful admission to the course is an honours degree.

The course is designed to be suitable for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. Those with a formal legal education already might be eligible for exemptions from one or more of the modules.

In fact, there is a wide mixture of professionals represented on the course including lawyers, construction industry professionals, architects, surveyors, engineers, oil industry contract professionals and many more. This is a course that has been tried and tested and delivered for many years to lawyers and non-lawyers. Where appropriate applicants should be able to demonstrate competence in written and oral English (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 570 or equivalent)
