Department of Civil and Structural Engineering ECED is the newest of the four postgraduate taught structures courses offered, with the first successful intake in 2004/05. UK consultants are heavily engaged in specialist national and overseas projects requiring understanding of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, and there is a constant demand for engineers with these skills, which are not covered in sufficient detail in undergraduate courses in the UK. This concern has been raised by the ICE and IStructE through the Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) and ECED is specifically aimed to address these concerns and equip engineers with skills in the broad are of civil engineering dynamics. Other courses available include: Structural Engineering Steel Construction Concrete Engineering Contaminant Hydrogeology Environmental Management of Urban Land and Water Urban Water Engineering and Management Course aims and features ECED was launched in 2004 to provide students with mathematical and experimental tools to deal with structural dynamics problems in areas of earthquake engineering, civil vibration engineering and blast and impact. The course shares the expertise of the Vibration Engineering Research Section, known internationally for a highly applied approach to research and consulting in civil engineering dynamics, dealing with high profile structures such as the London Millennium Bridge. These experiences are shared with course students. Course structure and content ECED provides a flexible learning route through full-time or part-time study options using 2- or 3-week modules. Teaching Lectures are delivered primarily by University of Sheffield academics at all levels. In addition specialist invited lectures are delivered by senior consulting engineers and researchers. Project work ECED students are eligible for dynamics-related dissertations which aim to have practical applications and industrial links. Assessment Assessment is by coursework, formal examination and dissertation with an oral examination. at the University of Sheffield The Department The Department was founded in 1917 and is currently based in the Sir Frederick Mappin Building. We provide a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the main branches of civil engineering. With over 30 academic staff, including 10 professors, around 250 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate students, the Department is one of the largest and most active civil engineering departments in the UK. All our undergraduate courses are accredited with the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers. Because of its unique course structure the MEng in Structural Engineering and Architecture is also accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Over the last five years research activity in the Department has continued to expand, and we now have over 70 researchers. Research work is based in three large groups; Structural Engineering, Groundwater Engineering and Geoscience, and Water and Environmental Management. Within each of the groups work of an internationally competitive standard is being carried out, in one of the most active research communities within civil engineering in the UK. The University University guides confirm our position as one of the UK's leading universities. The Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities, for instance, says that “Sheffield is a top university across the board”. Teaching quality assessments rate our teaching very highly across a wide range of subjects, and official research assessments confirm our reputation as a centre for world-class research in many disciplines. We have more than 24,000 students from 118 countries, and almost 6000 staff. The University of Sheffield is a popular choice with applicants for university places, and once they arrive our students enjoy the experience so much that many settle in Sheffield after they graduate. Our research partners and clients include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, GSK, ICI, Slazenger, and many more household names, as well as UK and overseas government agencies and charitable foundations. Our academic partners include leading universities around the world. International partnerships include Worldwide Universities Network (USA, Europe and China) and our partnership with Leeds and York Universities (the White Rose Consortium) has combined research power greater than that of either Oxford or Cambridge.
