Structure of Masters courses


Structure of Masters courses: The programmes consist of a number of compulsory core modules prior to specialist study pathways or a choice from a range of summer elective modules.

MBA, MBA (Marketing), MBA (Human Resource Management), MBA (Strategy): One-year full-time management programmes, covering all the main disciplines of business management (such as accounting, economics, ethics and management) with the option for students to undertake a general MBA or specialize in Marketing, HRM or Strategy. In drawing upon the international expertise of research-active staff, the MBA programmes all promote the development of cross-disciplinary knowledge in preparing students for effective management careers in both the private and public sectors.

MBA International Health Management & Leadership: A one year full time course aiming to provide a grounding in critical international health systems management issues and health services research methods, thus providing students with the skills and knowledge to conduct internationally-aware and relevant healthcare management and policy research studies. Amongst other objectives the course aims to provide advanced knowledge in key areas relevant to international healthcare systems, their management and reform; awareness of key leadership and influencing behaviours; • Awareness of the need for forward-looking strategising and innovation in sustaining excellence in healthcare delivery and a foundation in topics relevant to international business.

MBA Business and Property - Sets the analysis of property markets within the context of economics, finance and business. For intending business and property strategists in the fields of commercial property, valuation, or management consultancy, suitable for non-cognate graduates seeking professional accreditation from RICS, and cognate graduates, with or without professional accreditation, seeking to extend or deepen their business and property skills. The MBA Business and Property is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, allowing graduates to proceed to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and full professional membership of the RICS.

MSc Management, Innovation and Change - This course is suitable for a wide range of managerial and business careers and offers students the opportunity to explore many of the key skills required to become outstanding managers in growing and/or changing businesses. Our programme is designed to enable graduates from any background to acquire the knowledge, skills and professional network that will enable them to become outstanding managers in growing businesses. The programme provides our graduates with a unique combination of quantitative and qualitative analytical skills for understanding and being agents of change, entrepreneurs, and initiators and managers of many product, process and organisational innovations.

MSc Accounting & Finance - To cater for graduates who would like a career in the area of accounting and/or finance. We aim to devlop in our students a strong foundation in the principles and practise of accounting and finance as well as an understanding of the analytical tools required to make appropriate financial decisions. This is particularly important given on-going complex developments in the structure of the global financial environment. Our MSc students will develop the theoretical and practical skills and qualitative and quantitative tools necessary for the analysis of issues in different areas of accountancy and finance.

MSc Finance and Investment Management - For students who wish to prepare for entry into a career in investment management, or for those already at an early stage within the profession who wish to upgrade their qualifications. Specialist modules provide a sound knowledge of 'state of the art' analytic techniques used in the industry. Our programme is specifically designed for graduates intending to embark on a career in the area of finance and addresses the increasing need for financial players to be equipped with a strong foundation in the principles and practise of finance as well as having understanding of the analytical tools required to make appropriate financial decisions.

MSc Corporate Finance – Caters for students who would like a career in the area of corporate finance. We aim to devlop in our students a strong foundation in the principles and practise of corporate finance as well as an understanding of the analytical tools required to make appropriate financial decisions. This is particularly important given on-going complex developments in the structure of the global financial environment Our MSc students will develop the theoretical and practical skills and the qualitative and quantitative tools necessary for the analysis of issues in different areas of corporate finance.

MSc Property - For intending specialists in the fields of commercial property, valuation, or management consultancy, suitable for -non-cognate graduates seeking professional accreditation from RICS and cognate graduates, with or without professional accreditation, seeking to extend or deepen their property skills. The programme equips graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the current and future challenges associated with professional practice in the field of property. The MSc Property is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, allowing graduates to proceed to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and full professional membership of the RICS.

MSc Finance and Property - Offers graduates the opportunity to pursue a career in either finance or property. Graduates are also prepared for entry into the various faculties of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) concerned with urban property, and in particular the Commercial Property, Management Consultancy and Valuation faculties. The MSc Finance & Property is accredited by the RICS, allowing graduates to proceed to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and full professional membership of the RICS. Our MSc students develop an awareness of what drives investment behaviour in the contemporary world of finance and have the opportunity to develop the skills to identify appropriate qualitative and quantitative tools for the analysis of issues in different areas of finance.

MSc International Real Estate Markets - Places particular emphasis on economics, finance and investment and addresses those areas of real estate profession concerned with domestic and international real estate use, investment and development. The programme aims to develop interest in, and knowledge of, economics, investment, finance and management as analytical frameworks for understanding the operations and functions of real estate markets and institutions. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the current and future challenges associated with professional practice in the field of international real estate. The MSc International Real Estate Markets is accredited by the RICS, allowing graduates to proceed to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and full professional membership of the RICS.


University of Aberdeen Business School


The Business School comprises Accountancy & Finance, Economics, Management Studies, Property and the Post-Graduate Business School. The School also houses the Centre for European Labour Market Research, the Centre for Entrepreneur ship and the Centre for Property Research Located at Kings College, our Graduate programmes combine over 500 years of tradition and history with highly qualified and energetic staff who use modern teaching techniques in the generation of new ideas and the development of critical thinking. Each programme covers the core areas of business through a number of compulsory modules. Newly emerging and specialist areas are covered in a selective range of additional courses. The University of Aberdeen Business School covers a range of discipline groups, such as, Economics, Management, Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Property and Law. In all these areas we have staff with internationally recognised reputations and extensive experience of teaching graduate business programmes.

As part of the Association of Business Schools (ABS) we have access to expert advice and up to date information on developments in Business and Management to help improve the quality of our programmes.

The Business School currently comprises fifty academic staff, five Teaching Fellows/Assistants and five Research Fellows/Assistants.. The postgraduate programmes are supported by the Co-ordinator Graduate programmes and 3 secretaries and the School’s other activities are supported by the School Administrative Officer and a team of eight secretaries.

This means you will be taught by academics who may have written the books you are using and who are at the forefront in their fields of expertise.

The University is committed to ensuring the best of facilities for its students. We are currently spending £198 million on improving facilities over the next 10 years to include the building of a new library and sports facilities. Currently the University is developing a brand new student centre, which will house student support services along with the new Students’ Union.

With 4 main libraries the University has over one million volumes in our collections and one of the largest and best equipped libraries in Scotland. We have 3 museums Marischal Museum, the Zoology Museum and the Botanic Gardens and over 1000 computers on Campus including 24 hour access.

Students can join a wide range of student societies, or sports clubs like karate, scuba diving or shinty. We have excellent on campus sports facilities and are one of the most successful UK universities in sports. Our Underwater Hockey team (Octopush) have been BUSA champions for past 7 years and our Lifesaving Squad are currently Scottish Champions.

The University’s Students’ Association is also unique in organizing an annual Charities Campaign, which includes a Torcher Parade and Students Show

The city of Aberdeen is a place with a combination of historic and cosmopolitan charm. It is just half an hour from the buzz of the city centre and the golden sands of Aberdeen beach to the tranquility of the nearby hills and countryside. At night Aberdeen really lights up with a huge range of pubs, clubs, theatres and restaurants and has a vibrant music and performing arts scene which caters for all tastes.

Admission requirements The minimum requirements for our postgraduate programmes are a good first degree (equivalent to a British second class Honours degree, a 4 year University degree) and proficiency in English (a minimum score of TOEFL 600 + at least TWE 5, computer based TOEFL 250 + TWE 5 or overall IELTS band 7.0 + at least 6.0 in the writing component is required).
The Programme Director will consider applicants with non-standard qualifications, particularly those with work experience. Please be advised that we will require a month of pre-sessional English if your TOEFL score is between 580-599 (TWE 4.5), TOEFL 237-249 (TWE 4.5) in the computer based test or IELTS score is between 6.5-6.9 with 6 in the writing component.
